Some spindle motors are damaged due to improper storage

Some spindle motors are not ruined through use, but rather damaged due to improper storage.

Spindle motors are precision components. Improper storage environments, incorrect positioning, or a lack of necessary inspections and testing can lead to issues—such as rough rotation, abnormal noise, unstable operation, or even performance degradation—when the spindle is finally installed on a machine. Therefore, the proper storage of spare spindles is a matter of significant importance.

1.The spindle must be stored horizontally, and the packing case placed right-side up

If the spindle is in its original, unopened packaging, it should be placed upright according to the markings on the box. Do not store it upside down, tilted, or change its orientation arbitrarily. Proper positioning helps minimize potential issues caused by improper stress distribution over time.

2.Maintain a dry, low-dust storage environment

Motorized spindles should be stored in a dry, clean, and low-dust environment to prevent moisture and dust ingress. Generally, it is recommended to maintain the warehouse environment within the following ranges: temperature between 10°C and 45°C, and relative humidity kept below 50% whenever possible.

3

3.Perform periodic rotation checks during long-term storage

If the spindle is to be stored for more than a few months, a simple inspection every 4 to 8 weeks is recommended. Open the outer box and manually rotate the spindle shaft at least 10 full turns; this helps maintain the effectiveness of the internal lubrication while allowing you to check for smooth rotation. After the inspection, remember to replace the protective cover to ensure continued protection against dust.

4.Conduct a test run before installation after long-term storage

If the spindle has been stored for more than six months, it is advisable to perform a pre-installation test run of approximately 10 minutes. Confirm that the operation is stable and free of abnormal noise before putting it into service.

5.Recommended maximum storage period is generally two years

If the storage period is excessively long, or if abnormalities such as abnormal noise, binding, or rough rotation are detected during inspection, do not use the spindle immediately; instead, have it inspected and serviced first.

Many spindle issues arise not during actual operation, but during storage. Proper storage of spare spindles ensures more stable performance when they are eventually put to use. Keep these 5 key points in mind: store horizontally; keep the packaging box upright; ensure a dry, low-dust environment (humidity ≤50% if possible); manually rotate the shaft at least 10 full turns every 4–8 weeks; and perform a test run before installation after long-term storage.
